NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 19 – Kamukunji MP-elect Yusuf Hassan has vowed to work hard to serve his constituents in every way possible.
Speaking after clinching the hotly contested seat, he pledged to use the remainder of the time before the general election to bring change to the area.
“This is a moment we are very proud of as a nation. I would like to thank the people of Kamukunji for electing me as their Member of Parliament. I want to pledge again that I will work for them as hard as possible,” he stated.
“I would also want to thank my family; my wife and children for their unswerving support during this period. I would also like to thank the PNU Alliance for their support.”
He further emphasised the need for unity in the quest for a better future within the region.
“I will start work as soon as is possible and I intend to work with everybody in Kamukunji and I believe a new Kamukunji is possible,” he revealed.
Embakasi legislator Ferdinand Waititu who spearheaded the party’s campaign described the win by PNU’s Yusuf Hassan as well deserved.
Speaking just after the results were announced, he pointed out that the win was as a result of unity within the party saying it would ensure the party’s success in any other operation it undertakes.
He described the Kamukunji win as merely a tip in the iceberg for things to come.
“I have no doubt whatsoever that in future, we shall remain united as a PNU Alliance and we shall recapture the Nairobi politics as it was before,” he quipped.
The Orange Democratic Party conceded defeat in the just concluded Kamukunji by-election as Starehe Member of Parliament Margaret Wanjiru described the process as transparent.
She said that as a party, they will work together with the victor for the betterment of Kamukunji. She further praised the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) for a job well done saying it enabled the process to run smoothly.
“I would like to take responsibility and congratulate the PNU for a job well done. You have defeated us hands down in this election and I would also like to thank the IIEC for a very well done job,” she stated.
“I can tell you that this election was free and fair. All the voters that supported ODM thank you very much and all those that supported other parties including the winning party thank you too.”
“From this moment, we join hands with the incoming Member of Parliament to develop Kamukunji,” she vowed.
Mr Hassan garnered 19,030 votes against 15,476 polled by his bitter rival Ahmed Ibrahim of the Orange Democratic Movement.
Narc Kenya’s Brian Weke came third with 4,064 votes, while Agano Party candidate David Waihiga managed 367 votes.
There were 40,454 ballots cast in the by-election out of which 39,743 were valid. Seven hundred and eight votes were rejected and three votes disputed.
Mr Hassan was declared winner by Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) Returning Officer Joseph Masindet who announced the results at the YMCA Hall in Shauri Moyo.
Despite having been characterised by allegations of voter bribery and intimidation earlier in the day, the IIEC chief Issack Hassan said the mini poll was free and fair.
Voting at the constituency was conducted expeditiously due to the adoption of biometric voter identification which minimises the time voters spend on the queue.
