Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has officially been registered as the deputy chairman of the Labour Party of Kenya. The Star yesterday confirmed that Maina was officially registered as LPK vice chairperson on February 3 at the Registrar of Political Parties.“According to the returns for Elections of Labour Party of Kenya held on 11th December 2010 filed in this office on 3rd February 2011. Mr John Maina Njenga (Laikipia) is recorded as Deputy Chairperson of Labour Party of Kenya,” said Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u through IIEC communication manager Tabitha Mutemi.
Former nominated MP Dr Julia Ojiambo, who was Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka’s presidential running mate in the 2007 has been LPK’s leader.
Though still registered as the official party leader, Ojiambo has taken a back seat since President Kibaki appointed her the chairperson of the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service board in March 2009.  She was to serve for three years.
Maina joined LPK in May last year but immediately took over the running of the party’s headquarters located along Amboseli Road, Nairobi. It is from these offices that he launched the National Youth Movement for Yes, a group which was campaigning for enactment of the new constitution. Maina’s takeover of the party is seen as his strategy to consolidate his political empire ahead of 2012 General Election.
Though he has denied that he wants to vie in the coming elections, those close to him have hinted that he wants to be elected as the governor of Nairobi or Laikipia county.
Since he was released from jail in 2008, the former Munkigi leader has been active in politics. He has built a political empire mainly of youths from Central, Nairobi and Central Rift Valley provinces.
Last October, Maina formed a new church -- the Amazing Grace International -- saying he wanted to convert the over 5 million youths he once led in the illegal sect to followers the teachings of the bible. The church has since been meeting at the LPK offices. Maina has of late associated himself closely with Saboti MP and 2012 presidential hopeful Eugene Wamalwa.
Speaking at a Mombasa hotel after attending a rally at the Tononoka Grounds, which was also attended by Eugene, Njenga said Eugene is still not popular and it will take time for the youthful MP to sell himself to the masses. LPK was founded in 1998 and has 150 branches countrywide and a satellite office in the United Kingdom.
