ODM secretary general Anyang Nyong’o has written another letter to the UN Security Council maintaining that the party’s position on Kenya’s quest for a deferral has not changed.
The letter was written on Friday, a day after Prime Minister Raila Odinga met with some party members, to plot on how to support the Ocampo suspects aligned to the party.
Nyong’o wrote to Li Baodong, the President of the UN Security Council for the Month of March 2011, after learning of another letter written to the council by the country’s permanent representative to UN Macharia Kamau.“A key concern of members of the council expressed in the dialogue was that Kenya’s request did not seem to enjoy the support of both sides of the coalition government. I am pleased to inform you that on Tuesday 22 March 2011 the ODM party at its National Executive Council/Parliamentary group meeting chaired by the PM Rt. Hon Raila Odinga adopted a decision to push for the ICC cases relating to Kenya to be handled locally through a credible local mechanism,” Kamau wrote.
In his letter dated March 23 2011, Macharia further requested for another open meeting by the council to review the new development.But Nyongo’s letter arrived at the UN headquarters on Friday trashing all his requests despite having forwarded minutes on the meetings held.“I would like to categorically refute the Permanent Representative’s assertions that there is a new position that has been arrived at by ODM that means we support the deferral request,”Nyong’o wrote.
Further, he wrote, “This is untrue. Our party’s position remains exactly as it was stated in my letter to you of 11 March 2011.We said then that the request for a deferral by a section of the Kenyan Government should be rejected as being incompetent and frivolous.”
Nyongo’s new position further widens cracks within ODM as it contradicts the position of a group of MPs led by his deputy Joseph ole Nkaissery and Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba.
The Budalangi MP and Nkaissery announced at a press conference that ODM will hire lawyers for Ruto, Kosgey and Sang.But shortly after, Nyong’o wrote a text message to MPs and journalists denouncing the group.“The ODM party organs have NOT discussed nor agreed to any legal aid to any of the Ocampo Six. Any Statement attributed to the party in that regard is the personal view of the exponent and not the party. Anyang Nyongo, Sec. Gen,” read Nyongo’s message.
