Kanu may not field candidates for the Kamukunji and Ikolomani by-elections. This following differences between camps led by party chairman Uhuru Kenyatta and his vice chairman Gideon Moi.
A section of party officials allied to the former Baringo Central MP have complained that Uhuru was frustrating efforts to have Kanu candidates run in the by-elections.
Uhuru has written to IIEC stating that he is the one with authority to sign clearance papers for candidates seeking to run in any elections on the Kanu ticket.
Officials from 26 Kanu branches led by Keiyo South chairman Paul Kibet accused Uhuru of abandoning Kanu for PNU while at the same time preventing the party from carrying its activities.
They said party secretary general Nick Salat should be the one making official communication to the IIEC as regards Kanu affairs.“He is frustrating our efforts to field candidates as an independent party because he wants us to remain allied to PNU,” said Kibet adding that Kanu members were no longer interested in an alliance with PNU. Salat has already written to the IIEC chairman Isaac Hassan stating that the party will field candidates in Ikolomani and Kamukunji.
Yesterday, Kibet accused Uhuru of holding Kanu at ransom while at the same time seeking to form alliances with other parties including rebel ODM leader Eldoret North MP William Ruto.
Last year, Gideon’s team announced they had replaced Uhuru as chairman but the changes were not effected by the Registrar of Parties.
