RAILA’s ODM appeals to the IEBC to extend VOTER REGISTRATION PERIOD

Tuesday, the 18th of December 2012 - Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to extend the voter registration exercise which is scheduled to end at 5:30 p.m today.

The appeal was made by the ODM’s Secretary General Anyang' Nyong'o who said that the IEBC would do well to extend the voter registration process beyond today’s deadlines because of delays occasioned by the breakdown of BVR kits and the opening of registration points in some areas;

"I am not satisfied at all because the breakdown of BVRs was just phenomenal. Some lasted for as long as two weeks," he said.

"There was a lot of suspicion from the start because some centers could not even issue registration slips."

The ODM MP added that he would be bringing the matter before parliament;

"I will definitely push a motion in Parliament this (Tuesday) afternoon. But I have given that agenda to the IEBC. They are the professionals. They should know how many more days to add."

The IEBC on Monday said that it registered 12.7 millon voters. The commission had targeted to register 18 million voters.
