NO EXTENSION

The Interim Electoral Commission (IIEC) has ruled out an extension of the period for the ongoing voter registration.

IIEC chairman,Isaak Hassan warned Kenyans who are still dragging their feet that they risked being locked out as there will be no extension on the time set for the exercise.

Speaking to KBC in Kisii Hassan said IIEC had requested the Attorney General Amos Wako to postpone the publication of the Draft Constitution to pave way for the conclusion of voter registration thus ensuring there was no need for an extension.

Two weeks into the 45 days voter registration exercise, IIEC has so far registered 5, 017,304, which is half the target of 10 million voters before the referendum.

The number is however expected to rise as the figures from the constituencies set for the Electronic Voter Registration that begun registering on 12th April, 2010 are yet to be received.

Hassan also ruled out any possibility of extending voter registration exercise in south Mugirango. He said the exercise will come to a close in the next six days as earlier planed to enable the commission to verify and check on any irregularities ahead of the planned by election.

He warned that the electoral body will deal firmly and decisively with those found to have registered more than once.

He also discounted claims of night voter registration in Matuga constituency at the coast saying that IIEC officers were under strict instructions to close for the day at six in the evening.
