Unseemly exchanges have broken out over the mini-Cabinet reshuffle announced on Monday. Mvita MP Najib Balala has gone on the offensive against Prime Minister Raila Odinga after his removal as Minister for Tourism.
Central Kenya MPs have also complained that another MP from Kiambu should have been appointed Finance Minister to replace Mr Uhuru Kenyatta. Of course, that is to be expected of politicians.
What is more germane for us is that the Prime Minister and President Kibaki overlooked the opportunity to effect changes that focus on improving expertise and performance.
Instead, they were more intent on musical chairs that simply reflected petty political manoeuvres and shadow-boxing within their respective sides of the coalition Cabinet.
Kenyans would have been much more impressed if the President and the Prime Minister had come together to effect changes that punish mediocrity and reward merit; especially in the week when performance appraisals were revealing the best – and worst – performers in government ministries, departments and parastatals.
