The fallout in Kanu between chairman Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Gideon Moi appeared imminent on Thursday, a day after the party called off its national delegates conference that was scheduled for Friday.
Secretary-general Nick Salat, an ally of Mr Moi, said that they would make a major announcement regarding the party’s direction as Mr Kenyatta appeared to be preparing to jump ship.
But, former President Moi, who left the party’s chairmanship in 2002 for Mr Kenyatta expressed concern saying that the party lacked “a clear, sincere and responsible leadership”.
“This spectre of a possible deregistration is causing the party members great concern, frustration and anxiety. As a life member of Kanu, I should not be silent on such a crucial matter,” the former President said in a statement.
But former Gatanga MP David Murathe and Kanu organising secretary Justin Muturi told off Mr Salat and the former President.
Mr Muturi told the former President that he should “relax and enjoy his retirement”.
“Do they expect Uhuru to call the delegates to tell them that the oldest party has only registered six counties with the registrar? Is it Uhuru’s job or the secretary-general to ensure that the registration is done?” Mr Murathe added.
Mr Salat while denying accusations by Mr Kenyatta’s allies of delaying Kanu’s drive to comply with the Political Parties Act, asked the Deputy Prime Minister to leave so the party can move forward.

“Those allegations about me are unfounded and if he (Mr Kenyatta) feels that this is not where his heart is, I think it is only good that he lets go and wish us well and we will wish him well,” Mr Salat said.
