Former Public Works assistant minister Dick Wathika yesterday defected from PNU. Wathika has joined the Grand National Union. The former Makadara MP who has declared his interest in the Mukurwe-ini parliamentary seat said "GNU is the party to watch". “This is the party of the future. It has most of the support at the grassroots,” he said during registration.
Speaking during a delegates meeting at Mukurwe-ini town yesterday, Wathika expressed his optimism in winning the seat. “I am an honest leader. I hope you will elect me as your MP,” he told the delegates. GNU secretary general Nderitu Gachagua welcomed Wathika in the party. Others present included Nyeri County Council chairman Wachira Maina Keen and Nyeri town party branch chairman Samuel Wamathai.
The more than 300 delegates also urged former Information minister Mutahi Kagwe to join the party. The joining of Wathika into the party comes barely a month after Tetu MP Francis Nyammo defected from PNU and joined GNU party last month. The party is backing Deputy Peime Minister's Uhuru Kenyatta presidential bid. Maina lashed out at Prime Minister Raila Odinga for opposing the March 4, 2013 election date announced by the IEBC last weekend.
