URP dispute over members

A row has eruptedamong United Republican Party parliamentary aspirants in Chepalungu constituencyover the recruitment of party members. A section ofparliamentary aspirants have expressed dissatisfaction in the manner in which URPcoordinators were conducting recruitment exercise in the region. The aspirants said theexercise is being conducted in a non-transparent manner in favour of someaspirants against the wish of party supporters.
Speaking to the pressin Bomet town yesterday, Paul Bii said coordinators conducting the exercisewere selective and were conducting the exercise in favour of an individual. “It is a pity thatcoordinators themselves who should be non-partisan in the exercise have been compromiseto recruit members in favor of a particular candidate that has been endorsed bya local MP,” he said.
Bii questioned themanner in which the coordinators were picked saying supporters of individualsshould not be trusted with the exercise. “It became a surprise tous when coordinators who were unanimously picked were dismissed and individualsout to deny eligible supporters a chance selected by our MP to recruit membersselectively,” he added. Mr. Bii said theexercise was being done in favor of individual candidates to enable them winduring nominations.
Five parliamentaryaspirants from the region have appealed to URP interim national officials to interveneto enable the exercise become free and fair for all the party supporters. “Some supporters ofthe party are being locked out of the recruitment because they are notsupporters of some aspirants who have personalized the recruitment exercise forselfish interest,” said Bii.
Bii added: “the partynational office should intervene and salvage the situation because theregistration of membership is at limbo at the moment and I making hard for thesupporters to acquire membership.” The aspirants took aswipe at a local MP who they accuse of endorsing candidates for variouspositions against the wish of the voters.
