Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi has denied claims that he attended dinner in honour of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni to discuss ODM politics, and his rivalry with Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Mr Mudavadi told reporters at Ruiru that he attended the dinner at Mr Odinga’s Bondo home as a government official, not an ODM member.
He said it was ordinary for him as a senior government official to attend a function for a visiting head of State.
“Naturally, when a head of State is hosted (in the country), public figures like myself and others would be invited so that we can be part of that process,” he said.
He said the issue of his rivalry with Mr Odinga did not come up during that dinner last Saturday.
“Clearly, the head of State (Mr Museveni) was not going to be involved in party matters for ODM. He focused on issues that were broad and covering the East African Community.”
A statement from the PMs communications office after the dinner indicated that Mr Mudavadi attended the function in show of unity in ODM.
The Sabatia MP insisted that there was no tension in the party due to his campaign for a presidential ticket.
He said most party members supported the internal competition between him and the PM and denied that some MPs last week prevailed upon him to step aside for Mr Odinga.
On Monday, Mr Mudavadi  met delegates from the eight constituencies of Kiambu where he continued marketing his bid for the party ticket.
Meanwhile, a team set up by ODM to resolve differences over the presidential primaries has proposed new rules binding losers to remain in the party and back the winner.
The Rapid Response Team led by Regional Development minister Fred Gumo on Monday met for the second time at the Nairobi Safari Club to seek a compromise on the matter that some observers say threatens the party’s future.
