More than 2,000 residents of Lari gathered at Kimende primary school to celebrate veteran gospel musician Sammy Nene for winning the Evergreen Male of the Year Award at the Kigocho annual awards recently. Nene was also celebrating his award for the Longest Hit Song of the Year at the Mwafaka Awards.
Nene said that his song Geithia Mundu (loosely meaning great somebody) which has been dominating the airwaves has been in the public domain for the past 12 years and has not lost the glory and touch. It's still doing well in the competitive gospel music industry. He presented it during the gathering. “The song - which is a hymn song - has seen me travel to the United Nations severally. I have also performed it in big crusades organised by Pastor Pius Muiru, Reverend Teresiah Wairimu among other servants of God," he said.
Nene has 16 albums to his name and is currently working on a collabo with gospel artiste Alan Aaron named Nginya Hau Tukinyite (The far we have come). Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who were the chief guests didn't turn up but sent their  apologies.
In attendance were Lari MP David Njuguna, Juja MP William Kabogo and Mutito MP Kiema Kilonzo. The guest performers were radio presenter Warukemi, Mercy Nungari and former councilor Sovinga. Others were local radio personalities among them Jane Mumbi, head of Coro radio, and Wamari Mundu Mumu.
