A policewoman lost over Sh300,000 after muggers snatched her handbag which also contained a pistol. Police from the Special Crime Prevention Unit and the CID took less than 20 minutes to recover the handbag and the the gun. Police records state that the Chief Inspector of Police lost around $50,000 (Sh4.3 million).
The officer, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was driving along Forest Road when a group of muggers pounced on her. They disappeared towards Mathare slums. Sources in the police yesterday told the Star that Nairobi police chief Anthony Kibuchi directed tens of officers from the two elite squads to comb the slum and recover the gun. The incident happened at around 7 pm.
Still in the same area, barely an hour after the incident, a suspected carjacker was shot and injured by a Nairobi businessman after they attempted to rob him of his car on Juja road. The incident was reported at Pangani police station. Records at the station state that one of the four men was shot on his left arm as he attempted to escape. Police spokesman Erick Kiraithe confirmed the two incidents and said the police were following up on the suspects.
