Mobile firm launches ‘reverse call’ service

By Jackson Okoth

Essar Telecom Kenya, a leading low-end mobile cellular network operator, has launched a new service that enables subscribers make calls paid for by the receiver.
Exclusive to its yuMobile network, callers will dial 6665 to access this service dubbed Pay4me, allowing those with low or even zero balances to request for the person they would like to call to pay for the call they are making.
"We always strive to remain relevant in the market and the launch of Pay4me service is a significant step in ensuring that communication remains accessible by everybody at all times. This is a value added service which could be very useful for prepaid customers running out of credit in their account," said Madhur Teneja, yuMobile country manager while unveiling the new service.
Subscribers have to dial 6665 in place of the zero at the beginning of the mobile number they are calling. The recipient will then receive a call requesting him or her to pay for the call, and lastly, after accepting, the call will be connected and charged at an affordable rate of Sh3 per minute.
This is the latest addition to the range of innovative and affordable products already being offered by yuMobile.
Unlike during the 2010 festive season when mobile phone companies went overboard with free call offers, there was little activity in December 2011 as high inflation hit mobile phone firms.
