  • VP roots for live TV shows saying they would give Kenyans chance to interrogate aspirants
Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka on Tuesday named his campaign team as he proposed American-style televised public debates for presidential aspirants ahead of this year’s General Election.
Mr Musyoka said he was ready to debate with his political competitors within and outside the PNU Alliance on how best to solve Kenya’s social, economic and political challenges.
“I look forward to publicly debating with fellow presidential aspirants on political ideology, policy issues related to economy and jobs creation, security, education, agriculture and foreign relations,” he told a delegation of elders that visited him at his Yatta ranch in Machakos County.
The VP said such debates, popular in United States and other major world democracies, would help Kenyans to keenly scrutinise the candidates’ resolve and commitment in the fight against corruption and eradication of poverty.
Mr Musyoka urged public universities to make preparations for hosting and moderating the televised debates to give Kenyans a chance to directly interrogate the aspirants’ agenda for the country.
The VP unveiled his core presidential campaign team to manage his second shot at the top seat later this year.
The campaign advisory group includes Mr Mutuma Kathurima, Prof Marangu Marete, lawyers Donald Kipkorir and Koki Muli, Baringo County Council chairperson Elizabeth Chesang, Ms Rose Kimotho, Mr Hassan Gullet Abdille, and youth leader Joseph Thuku.
“I’ve tasked this team to fashion my campaigns and help with possible running mates,” he said. The full team would be unveilled at another ceremony.
“I’ll be counting on your support in organising my presidential campaign,” he said.
Mr Musyoka promised to push for the amendment of the law barring those without a university degree from vying for county seats.
He said the councillors, some of whom had demonstrated credible leadership skills, should not be locked out on the basis of their education qualifications.
