G47 alliance meets to plan for next elections

THE G47 political alliance which brings together trade unions and civil society groups has started discussing their plans for the general election. Representatives of member groups met in Nairobi and discussed rules of engagement  groups which will join the alliance ahead of the polls.
"We held fruitful discussions with more than 60 representatives from different groups which have already joined the alliance," said NGOs council chairman Ken Wafula.
Representatives of university students, church organisations, the diaspora and some trade unions endorsed the plan for the alliance to field a presidential candidate in the polls.
"Our plan to field a presidential candidate from outside the current parliament is still on so that we help this country get a leader committed to delivering actual reforms desired by Kenyans," said Wafula.
So far, eleven non-parliamentary political parties have joined the alliance. Some of the prominent figures associated with it include former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga who was represented at the meeting.
Also present were Dr Shem Ochuodho representing supporters in the diaspora and Dr Julia Ojiambo of the Labour Party of Kenya. KUPPET and the Universities Academic Staff Union is among other groups in the alliance. The alliance will be choosing a political party.
The National Youth Council plans to field a presidential candidate through the alliance. “We want to inform our members in the counties that we are going to sponsor a candidate to battle it out with other aspirants during nomination of presidential candidate for the G47 alliance.
"We have the numbers and united we can produce the next president for Kenya” said youth council officials Patrick Orenga and Jacob Kyule.
NYC says it has so far registered 2.5million members across the country. It was created under the National Youth Council Act 2009 and the National Youth Policy of 2006.
