FORMER Internal Security minister Julius Sunkuli has declared that he will run for the post of senator in Narok county. Sunkuli, who is Kenya's Ambassador to China, reversed his earlier decision to vie for governorship due to a pre-election memorandum of understanding. Sunkuli made the declaration after hosting Narok leaders in a ceremony held at his Oldonyorasha home in Transmara district.
More than 20 councilors led by Narok town council chairman Isaac Partoip and other leaders endorsed his candidature saying he is the best for the position given his experience in politics. “If given the mandate, I will ensure that the issues affecting the county are addressed and equitable distribution of resources,” Sunkuli said.
Sunkuli promised the locals that he will ensure all the communities living in the cosmopolitan county live in harmony. On his part, Association of Maasai Professionals chairman Joseph Sonkori said that they will vet all the aspirants in the county who are seeking elective positions in this year’s polls.
Sonkori said that every leader should be subjected to scrutiny to get the best leaders. He said that the vetting board will be formed before February and will consist of Maasai elites, Maasai council of elders, Church leaders, youth representative and opinion leaders. He called for a sober approach in electing leaders.
Sonkori told the electorate to ensure that those elected meet the strict requirements on leadership and integrity as outlined in the constitution. “Let us scrutinise those vying for various leadership positions in the county and elect leaders with a clean record,” he said. Sonkori urged the leaders vying for various seats to unite all the tribes residing in the cosmopolitan county.
