FORMER Baringo Central Member of Parliament Gideon Moi has called on the Kalenjin community to unite prior to the next elections and vote as a block for a candidate from the community. Speaking at the controversial Chepyuk phase three settlement scheme over the weekend, Moi said with the way the political landscape is taking shape the Kalenjin community has no option but to unite and vote for one of their own.“Other people are set to go and we should not be left behind,” he said
He blamed the current constitution for being the cause of political alignments on tribal basis. He warned the Kalenjin community against being duped by some politicians to serve their own selfish political interests. In an apparent reference to Eldoret North Member of Parliament Wiliam Ruto, Moi said the community had been held to ransom by leaders with no vision.
He said Ruto’s recent change of parties showed that he had no leadership qualities and was leading the community nowhere. He urged the Kalenjin community to remain in Kanu. “For how long will somebody take us in circles from one party another to serve his personal interests?“Gideon said. Former Bomet Member of Parliament Nick Salat said that Eldoret North MP has a very slim chance of becoming the country's president owing to the case against him at the International Criminal Court and urged the community to rally behind Gideon Moi .
He urged the community to reconsider rejoining Kanu saying the party had a national outlook unlike the United Republican Party, recently formed by Ruto. "Come back home to your party that has a following throughout the country and don’t be duped to join a party owned by a few individuals," he said. Salat's sentiments were echoed by former Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairperson Zipporah Kittony, former Mt Elgon MP Joe Kimkung and political activist Abrahaman Bafadihili.
