MORE than 50 families have sought refuge in Kajiado town after a deadly scuffle between a local and two other people at Bisil market. They are now requesting the goverment to guarantee the safety of their lives and property they left behind after the Wednesday incident in which one person died.
According to state security agencies in the area, a security guard was hacked to death with a matchet. ''After the incident, residents converged and resolved to avenge the attack metted on their own, which resulted in destruction of property and looting of business premises belonging to non-locals,'' said the security agencies.
At least 20 people, among them a police officer, have been injured in the five-day running battles between the locals and those perceived to be outsiders. Kajiado District Commissioner Kerrow Hassan said at the weekend: "As we are talking now, the situation is under control. I called for assistance from the police who restored order immediately." By yesterday morning, local provincial administrators and the police were seen keeping vigil on the property of those displaced by the clashes.
Elsewhere in Kibini, Sultan Hamud, in the county, security have been restored after last week attack on 30 employees of East African Portland Cement Company by members the local community. Those affected and unable to travel to Kajiado town have sought refuge at a local Administration Police centre as they await safe passage from the area.
The DC warned that any person found inciting others to fight will be arrested and prosecuted. He said the killing of the said person is not connected to cement wars that had spilled to other areas of the county. He termed the killing of the guard "normal criminal activity" adding that two people have since been arrested and will appear in court today on Monday.
Elsewhere in Kibini area of Sultan Hamud area of Kajiado County, security have been restored after last week attack on the attack of 30 employees of East African Portland Cement Company by the local community. Residents descended on the worker stationed at Kibini stone crushing plant for the cement company on allegation that the government had failed to reinstate the suspended board of directors at EAPCC. Those employees flushed out are said to be non-locals.
The local DO in the area, assisted by police, sought safety passage of the Portland staff after it emerged their security was threatened over the weekend. No property belonging to the company was destroyed and the displaced employees are now camped at Blue Triangle Junior Camp in Athi River town.
