It is official that Eldoret North MP William Ruto and his allies will contest the next election on a United Republican Party of Kenya ticket, the new political party they have launched following their foiled bid to take control of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
The party, founded on strong republican principles and ideologies, promises a lean and efficient government and believes in family values and African principles.
However, the newest party's main challenge is not limited to the urgency to comply to the political parties and elections act but effectively branding URP as the party with a difference by actualizing the letter and spirit of its formation.
The dream of a Kenyan republican party has been realized and according to the 16 legislators and their supporters who unveiled the party to journalists, this is the party to deliver the fresh start yearned for by Kenyans.
"Today we bring you a new political party in keeping with the new constitution. A political party that denotes a fresh start that we yearn for.  A political party that represents the ideals we stand for." Reads a statement sent to newsrooms.
With Trade minister Chirau Mwakwere rumored to have shelved his presidential ambition to become a running mate, competition for the party's presidential ticket now pits William Ruto against his Lugari counterpart Cyrus Jirongo.
The move to form a new political party will certainly rejuvenate debate on the fate of such rebel MP's in the context of the political parties act.
Section 14 (5) of the political parties act prohibits political party members from forming or joining in the formation of a different political party. Promoting ideologies, interests or policies of another political party is also contrary to the law and members guilty of that shall be deemed to have resigned from their parties.
