More than 20 political parties will this week meet in Nairobi to strategise on how to enter into an alliance with former ruling party Kanu.
The move, which is causing anxiety within PNU, is part of a strategy by allies of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta to revamp Kanu as his main political vehicle for the presidency in this year’s General Election.
The party is to change its name from Kenya African National Union to Kenya Alliance for National Unity to enable other parties to join.

According to sources, the 24 parties will meet before announcing their decision to join the Kanu alliance.

The process of revamping the party was started two weeks ago during a two-day retreat of its National Executive Council (NEC) chaired by Mr Kenyatta in Naivasha.
The NEC meeting sanctioned the start of recruitment.
“However, we cannot recruit on the basis of a new constitution that has not been sanctioned by our members. In this respect, by the end of this month, our delegates will meet in Kasarani to adopt the new constitution and open the door for recruitment,” Kanu executive officer Joseph Mathai told the Nation.
According to party secretary general Nick Salat, a NEC meeting will be held on Thursday to map out strategies for the party’s recruitment drive ahead of elections.
Mr Mathai said that the meeting will also decide whether parties that join the Kanu alliance will participate in the elections.
Mr Kenyatta, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Party and PNU’s Prof George Saitoti agreed last week to carry out individual member recruitment before they could hold joint nominations.
