Police officers interdicted over killing of a father, son

By Cyrus Ombati
Two police officers have been interdicted and charged in court with murder over the shooting dead of a father and his son in Nairobi's Kawangware estate.
The officers appeared before Justice Philomena Mwilu at about 5.30pm on Wednesday but did not take plea and the case was pushed to December 7.
They were accused of killing Ibrahim Ondego and his son Joseph Nyaberi. The incident, which happened on Wednesday at about 3am sparked protests from the locals who demanded action on the officers.
The officers were hurriedly taken to court less than 10 hours after the incident had happened and police managed to convince the Judge to wait for their arrival under security.
Police claimed the two were shot after being mistaken for thugs. It turned out that Ondego was a vegetable vendor in the area while Nyaberi had just finished his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education from Ndurarua Primary in Kawangware.
According to Ondego’s other son, 17-year-old Isaac Okech, the two met two plain clothes police officers who claimed that they were pursuing gangsters.
One of the officers attached to the Muthangari police station, shot Ondego before turning the gun to Nyaberi as they walked to a near market to pick vegetables.
Calm returned after the arrest of the officers. Assistant minister Simon Ogari who is the MP for the two has condemned the shooting and urged that action be taken on the officers responsible.
Nairobi Area police boss Anthony Kibuchi said the officers had been interdicted before they appeared in court.
"They first misled the country and are accused of murder. It is unfortunate that such people died," he said on the phone.
Police have been criticised of being trigger-happy.
