Lead from front, VP tells Church

By Mutinda Mwanzia
Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka has challenged Christians to be at the forefront in fighting vices that threaten the country’s nationhood.
Kalonzo reiterated the Church’s role in laying a firm foundation for future prosperity.
"It is meaningless, indeed sinful, to sit back and let evil thrive among us when you know very well what is right and therefore what ought to be done," said Kalonzo.
Lose standing The VP said the Church will lose its standing as the conscience of society if it condones vices.
"It is even worse when the Church joins those who thrive on impropriety," said Kalonzo.
He said the Church has a duty to fight ills threatening the moral fabric of society.
Kalonzo spoke at the Nyayo National Stadium at celebrations to mark 90 years since the Salvation Army Church started evangelisation in Kenya.
He challenged Kenyans to nurture an attitude of thanksgiving instead of being "a nation of whiners".
The VP lauded the Salvation Army for setting up schools and youth polytechnics, which he said have given the youth access to education and training.
"This work in education deserves every commendation and support," said Kalonzo.
He welcomed the initiative started by the church in 40 schools in central Kenya aimed at solving the water crisis and enhancing sanitation.
"Your programmes have redefined compassion in a world caught in the treadmill of consumerism and hedonism. Do not tire to do even more for you know where your reward will come from," said Kalonzo.
City Clerk Philip Kisia, Mayor George Aladwa, Kibwezi MP Philip Kaloki and former Labour Minister and Kangundo MP, Kimeu Ngutu attended the celebrations.
