The government should launch a comprehensive youth programme if the economy is to be revived.
According to Eldoret North MP, jobless youth are not sufficiently equipped with skills to be productive in Kenya’s economy.
Mr Ruto said the Kazi Kwa Vijanaprogramme was outdated in this era of e-commerce, computer, e-mail and other modern technologies.
“The Kazi kwa Vijana programme makes youth use pangas (machetes). This belongs to the stone age.
“Our youth should now be equipped with modern technology to make a difference in our economy,” he said.
He said the youth should be trained in polytechnics in courses such as masonry, electronics, welding and agricultural skills.
“The youth should be given interest-free loans to start businesses. This way, they will make the necessary contribution to the national economy,” he told a public rally in Malindi on Sunday.
Mr Ruto urged residents to vote for UDM in his quest for presidency and said if elected, he would focus on women and youth funds.
He was accompanied by Kaloleni MP Mr Kazungu Kambi, former MPs Anania Mwaboza, Basil Criticos, Lucas Maitha and local councillors from Kilifi County.
He decried recent attacks by al-Shabaab insurgents saying they had created insecurity, hindered economic development and affected the tourism sector.
