The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has demanded the arrest of those who attacked presidential hopeful Raphael Tuju’s convoy in Kisumu on Friday.
Chairman Mzalando Kibunjia described the attack as unfortunate and revealed they were already working with the Criminal Investigations Department and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to spearhead investigations.
Mr Tuju met a hostile crowd at Kondele estate, Kisumu which stoned vehicles in his convoy.
Mr Kibunjia said it was unfortunate that such intolerance was rearing its ugly head as the country heads to next year’s General Election.
“Those who stoned Mr Tuju must be identified, arrested and prosecuted,” said Mr Kibunjia at the commission’s offices in Nairobi.
“We cannot enter an election year while condoning this kind of behaviour. We will work with the police to nip this permeating political intolerance in the bud,” he added.
Separately, Medical Services minister Anyang Nyong’o was among several leaders who condemned the attack on Mr Tuju’s convoy.
“Anyone who wants to conduct campaigns or vie for the presidency should be left to do so in peace because it is their democratic right to visit and hold meetings in any part of this country,” said the ODM secretary-general.
The Meru Council of Elders — Njuri Ncheke — also condemned the attack and urged Prime Minister Raila Odinga to do the same.
Council secretary-general Phares Ruteere told journalists in Meru that leaders should ask their supporters to exercise restraint when their opponents campaign in their strongholds.
Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa also criticised the attack, saying the youths were incited.
He said if the perpetrators are not prosecuted, similar cases were likely to occur in the future.
