A former commander of the General Service Unit will stand witness for Eldoret North MP William Ruto during the ongoing confirmation of charges hearing.
Mr Ruto said, before he left for The Hague, that Mr Samson Cheramboss would challenge allegations that he sponsored the killings of non-Kalenjin during the post-election violence.
Mr Ruto has described the accusations by International Criminal Court prosecutor Louis Moreno-Ocampo as falsehoods and conspiracies.
“We want to shame the devil. Cheramboss will come along and testify that I never distributed any guns as alleged by (Mr Moreno)-Ocampo,” Mr Ruto said during a TV interview.
Mr Cheramboss was at one point the commandant of the presidential security unit during President Moi’s reign.
The prosecutor alleges that Mr Ruto and Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey were in charge of a network with military structure which planned and financed the eviction of the Kikuyu, Kamba and Kisii from the Rift Valley during the 2008 post-election violence.
Kass FM presenter Joshua arap Sang is accused of using his radio broadcasts to rally residents to evict the three groups.
Mr Ruto revealed that the prosecutor had in his evidence alleged that he used a network of retired military and security officers to coordinate the violence.
The Eldoret North MP gave insights into his defence, which would be built on alibi arguments that he was elsewhere at the time the alleged offences were committed.
Mr Ruto said he intended to argue that he was at assistant minister Margaret Wanjiru’s church at the time of the alleged planning of violence.
