Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka on Monday announced his personal donation of Sh2 millions to cater for 2,000 Harambee Stars fans’ trip to Kampala.
The teams clash for the team’s Africa Cup of Nations, on October 8 in their last Group J return leg, is a must-win qualifier against Uganda Cranes.
Kenya must win and hope that Angola loses to Guinea Bissau to qualify for the continental finals to be held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea next year.
Kalonzo congratulated the Kenya Football Fans Association (Kefoca) for making him their patron and appealed to President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other leaders to contribute towards the trip.
“I don’t want to gain any credit on this and I welcome everybody on board to chip in because the team belongs to all Kenyans,” the VP said.
He said he will join the travelling fans in Eldoret. “We want to move to Kampala in a coalition,” said Kalonzo, who is also the Minister for Home Affairs.
Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Ludeki Chweya, Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa, Councillor Hashin and Joseph Mtambo each promised to donated a bus.
Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa also pledged several buses from the city council.
Aladwa, who was appointed the Kefofa deputy patron, attributed the poor state of local football to incompetence and urged stakeholders from the grassroots to vote wisely during the planned national football elections.
“Don’t elect businessmen,” he said, to thunderous cheers from the packed hall. Retired Harambee Stars players were also present.
Kefofa chairman Joash Amukayia urged the team’s supporters who wish to travel for the match to register with the association.
