Bett worried over Chirchir’s fate

BY CORRESPONDENT
Roads Minister Frankline Bett
Roads Minister Franklin Bett Saturday expressed concern over failure by the IEBC panel to include commissioner Davies Chirchir to the list of those shortlisted for Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission(IEBC).
Sources have revealed that Chirirchir was knocked due to his involvement with the Kalonzo campaign in 2007 and his participation in ODM-K politics as the law outlawed inclusion of individuals who may have actively participated in politics within the past five years.
Other applicants left out on the same account include Andrew Ligale and Ochieng Mbeo among others.
Mr Chirchir,a who is a commissioner with Independent Interim Electoral Commission(IIEC) was among four others commissioners whose names didn’t feature in the list of IEBC.
Minister Bett said despite Chirchir having been the brain child behind the establishment of the electronic registration of voters his name should have been among those shortlisted in the IEBC.
Other commissioners whose names were not in the IEBC included Winnie Guchu,Tiya Galgalo,Hamara Ibrahim and Douglas Mwasi.
Bett said that Chirchir system proved beyond reasonable doubt that it was the best to check on rigging and his contribution should have been honored by having his name in the list of IEBC.
Bett who is Buret MP said Chirchir electronic voter’s registration system may have scared those with sinister motive on the forthcoming general election.
He said Kalenjin community who are third in population after Kikuyu and Luhyas in the country deserve a slot in the new body and Chirchir omission leaves a lot to be desired.
“As Kalenjin community we are concerned why Chirchir who was the brainchild behind of electronic voters registration was not considered when shortlist new commissioners in the list of IEBC,” Bett asked.
Bett was speaking at Kapmaso Primary School in the neighbouring Belgut Constituency during a funds drive in aid of 200 University Students from Kabianga Ward.A total of Ksh 438,110 was realized with Bett donating Sh.200, 000.Belgut MP Charles Keter sent sh.3000.
Councilor Samuel Kurgat from Kabianga ward and councilor Andrew Soi donated sh.40, 000 each with parents giving sh.110, 000.
On Mau Forest evictees Bett said they should be accorded the same treatment other Internally Displaced Persons are being accorded(IDPs) by being given alternative settlement with ready built shelters.
He said giving the affected cash to buy land was suicidal since they were likely to squander the money before buying any land for settlement.
“The government should identify land for the Mau evictees where they should build them houses and offer transport for them to their new settlement the way its being done to other IDPs in the country,” Bett said.
Bett said all IDPs regardless of the problems they went through should be treated equally without any discrimination.
