The Cutting Edge

WHAT A HOOT. The National Environment Management Authority’s proposed motor vehicle pollution compliance certificate is a funny joke, remarks Martin Makundi, on the proposed Sh5000,000 fine. “The draft regulations are laughable! First, the fine is bigger than the market value of most of the jalopies targeted. Nema should stick to realistic goals such as clearing the heavy stink in my tourist city of Mombasa, where uncollected garbage is rotting in every open space.” His contact is makundih@yahoo.com.

NO ANSWER. Since he returned his Nokia 3230 to the Nokia Centre in Nairobi for a repeat repair job after the screen went blank a year ago, Norbert Shihemi has made numerous trips, only to be promised that he would be called once it’s ready and he’s getting sick and tired of waiting. He just had the phone for slightly over a month, and having paid a princely Sh5,000 for the service, Norbert says he deserves to be treated fairly. “I need my phone because I’ve plenty of data on it,” he adds. His contact is shemy2b@yahoo.com

CRAZY OFFICIALDOM. The birthday Beatrice Wanjiru has celebrated for 30 years is under threat and she is putting up a big fight. It all started when she took her birth certificate to be certified, only to be told that the birth date was wrong. “They claim I was born on the 29th, but my mother says it was the 28th. They say they won’t certify it unless I agree. My passport and all other papers indicate the 29th. What do I do now?” Her contact is beatuchi@yahoo.com or Tel. 0722731370.

PESKY FELLOWS. While Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia is concentrating on bigger things, there are some pesky fellows chipping away at some of the gains that have been made right on his office doorstep, reports Musa al Hassan. A group hangs around Mama Ngina Street in the city, overturning and damaging flower beds and pots opposite International Life House and just outside Barclays Bank’s Queensway Branch. “I’ve not seen askaris telling off people leaning on rails and sitting on flower pots,” he moans.

NOSTALGIC. Former Housing minister J.D. Otiende’s recent interview with NTV’s John Allan Namu, Wambua Musembi says, filled him with nostalgia about the good old days after Independence when leaders “were intelligent and had a vision and commitment to serve the country”. Wambua adds: “They had a sense of duty and a selfless determination to lead by example. They knew what was expected of them and carried out their duties without worrying about, ‘what is in it for me?’”
Have a great day, won’t you!
