Speaking at the launch yesterday, Information and Communications minister Samuel Poghisio said the book will detail the country’s greatness which the media has ignored.
It will be published every year to encourage Kenyans to think positively about themselves and serve as a source of reliable information about the government and its programmes. “It has been ironical that people who say and write a lot of ugly things about this country have gone ahead and bought houses in Kenya and don’t want to leave, but now we have a book here which will paint the right picture of our country,” Poghisio said.
PS Bitange Ndemo said the bashing the country gets from Western media is due to lack of accurate information about Kenya on the internet adding that putting the Yearbook on the digital platform will help furnish correct information to those keen on information about Kenya. “We will no longer hear that we were misquoted, because through this book we are putting the Kenyan story out there not only for today but also for future generations,” Ndemo said describing the book as a record of history.
The launch ceremony was conducted by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who challenged the authors to help address the poor reading culture, low literacy and poor book buying culture in Kenya.
The book, apart from celebrating the cultural and ethnic diversities of the Kenyan people, also highlights the economic strides the country has made in the past 48 years. It also documents the tourism and sports sector as well the institutional reforms the country is pursuing.
