KONOIN MP Julius Kones is seeking to take over as the new Public Accounts Committee chairman to replace former Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale who lost an election petition.

The committee has been the most vibrant in Parliament under the steering of the former vocal legislator. No one has challenged Kones for the seat.

The MP has been campaigning for support from members of the committee since last week.Members have been given notice of the election of the new chairman tommorow.“I am seeking to take over as the PAC chairman. I have talked to members and the majority of them are with me,” Kones said.

The Konoin legislator is a close associate of suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto and is likely to get the support of MPs in the committee allied to Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and the Eldoret North MP. “I had attempted to take over from Khalwale in the last elections but I lost by a vote. Now that he is not there I am sure I will conquer,” the MP said.

Nyatike MP Omondi Anyanga who is a member of the committee yesterday said the committee should be wary of some its members who are prone to manipulation by agents of the State. "We need someone firm, a brave individual who will not keep on walking in and out to consult with strangers before making a decision. We should not pick a chairman of PAC based on ongoing wars," Anyanga said.

In the last committee elections, Kones and Bonchari MP Charles Onyancha challenged Khalwale but lost. Onyancha took over as the Vice Chairman and is expected to remain in his seat as the committee composition may not favour ODM due to the ongoing political wrangles.

Uhuru and Ruto allies in the committee include Chachu Ganya (North Horr), Boaz Keino (Marakwet West), David Ngugi (Kinangop) and Alex Mwiru (Tharaka).

Kones a professional mathematician could also benefit from the support of two ODM-K MPs in the committee Dr Nuh Nassir Abdi (Bura) and Daniel Muoki (Mwala).
