Share/Save/Bookmark PRESIDENT Kibaki could be trying protect himself using the government’s sustained efforts to have the ICC case against the Ocampo Six postponed, the civil society said yesterday.
Addressing the media during a press briefing, Timothy Njoya alluded that Kibaki’s latest generosity to sponsor the shuttle diplomacy using the VP Kalonzo Musyoka and other ministers was meant to shield himself.
The civil society lobby group under the National Civil Society Congress decried the blatant waste of tax payers money on shuttle diplomacy yet 16 crucial legislation due before the next elections were yet to be accomplished.Close to Sh70 million has been spent on shuttle diplomacy, the lobby group claimed.“One day Kibaki will find himself in court to answer charges on why he wasted taxpayers money for the shuttle diplomacy which is not in the interest of the Kenyans and victims of post-election violence,” they said.
The lobby group plans to stage demonstrations to seek court justice if three of the suspects do not quit their public positions and if the shuttle diplomacy continues.“The mission to have the case deferred will not succeed,” Njoya vowed saying that Kibaki was keen to show three of the six suspects that he cares for them.“The President is aware that the greatest responsibility lay with him and that finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura and former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali might mention his name at the Hague. He simply wants to placate them not to mention him while at the Hague,” Njoya said. “President Kibaki is never known to protect or assist anybody since Kenya got independence,” he added.
