President Kibaki has been invited by Rift Valley MPs to officially open the Eldoret ASK Show on Thursday but the event will also be used to strengthen the newfound relationship between Kibaki’s PNU and ODM rebel MPs led by Ruto.
Agriculture minister Sally Kosgey, who was a close ally of Raila but shifted to Ruto’s group, presented the official invitation to Kibaki in her capacity as Deputy Patron of the ASK. Asked if Kibaki will have another agenda in the region apart from the official ASK function, Cheranganyi MP Joshua Kutunyi said any meeting that brings together politicians was bound to have many agendas. Also invited to grace the event are Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta.
ODM Deputy Party leader Musalia Mudavadi will tour the region for the second time in two weeks to test the political situation.The scramble for political control of the region is set to intensify and sources indicate that Mudavadi who will be in Eldoret East is preparing ground for a tour by Prime Minister Raila Odinga to Ruto’s backyard in the next few days. Raila’s tour may come at a time when Ruto’s group is angry after being barred from addressing a rally they had planned in Kisumu due to security reasons.
Mudavadi was in Eldoret and Iten where he received a rather warm reception as he struck a reconciliatory approach saying differences between Ruto and the PM or ODM can be sorted out through dialogue. “Nothing is impossible in our politics. It’s not good to make our differences so personal and turn them into hatred. Remember one time me and Ruto were campaigning for Uhuru to be president and you should not think that we can never be together again," said Mudavadi.
Mudavadi urged the Kalenjin community to go slow instead of rushing to quit ODM. His sentiments were backed by Keiyo North MP Lucas Chepkitonyi.
Sources indicate that Kibaki has lined up a list of names from the Kalenjin community for possible appointments to some of the key positions in government to appreciate Ruto’s decision to back him.
Raila’s team in the region is also in the process of forming a formidable think tank of professionals who will spearhead the PMs campaign to enable him regain lost political ground following his fallout with the Ruto camp.
A week ago Kalenjin elders led by Seid Keittanyi met the Luo Council of Elders led by chairman Willis Otondi. They discussed how to reconcile leaders from the two communities. However the Kalenjin Council of Elders said the elders who met with the Luo group were doing so as ODM political elders and not on behalf of the Kalenjin community.
Kibaki was in Eldoret last month where he was invited by Ruto’s group to a peace and reconciliation rally at the 64 Stadium where he paraded Ruto before the crowd and said he would work with the Eldoret North MP.
Since then Ruto has been attending PNU meetings and sources says he is now part of a the key advisers to the President.
