Candidates eyeing the Changamwe civic seat on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket have protested at the party’s decision to postpone the nominations that were to be held on Sunday.
The aspirants for the by-election turned up at Changamwe social hall only to be informed that the elections board had pushed the nominations to Tuesday.
They accused the board of making changes without informing them resulting in unnecessary confusion and anxiety among their supporters.
“We suspect a sinister motive in the decision to cancel the nomination. We are appealing to the board to make proper communication to avoid further confusion,” Mr Peter Otieno Oduor said.
Another aspirant, Mr Ibrahim Galgalo, accused the board of trying to manipulate the process.
“The party headquarters should ensure the process is free and fair and stop creating unnecessary anxiety,” he added.
However, the returning officer, Mr Kizito Otieno Ogot, and ODM deputy national vice chairman Ramadhan Kajembe arrived later and calmed the angry aspirants and their supporters.
The seat fell vacant last year after the death of Mr Kelvin Wesonga who had won it in 2007.
