ARMS RECOVERED

Police in Yatta district, Eastern Province have recovered a cache of firearms that police suspect were being transported to Nairobi.

The firearms included three revolvers, four pistols and 26 rounds of ammunition.

The weapons suspected to have entered into the country from war torn Somali were discovered from a Nairobi bound bus which was coming from Garissa.

A suspect whom the police identified as Hussein Mohammed Dube, 29, was arrested and was helping the police with investigations.

Police led by Matuu Deputy Officer Commanding Station William Kaptich said they swung into action after being tipped-off by members of the public that a bus from Garissa heading to Nairobi was ferrying illegal firearms.

The security officers mounted two road blocks along the Mwingi - Garissa highway and conducted thorough checks on the vehicles plying the route.

The guns had been dismantled and stashed in 20 litre-jerricans of water which were then placed at the back seat of the bus.

''The suspect was promptly arrested from the back seat after the bus crew identified him as the owner of the container,'' Mr. Kaptich said.

Police said the accused who hails from Madogo division in Tana River district will be arraigned in court once the investigations were complete.
