YES WOMEN

ODM women leaders have launched a campaign to support the Proposed Constitution.

Under the Orange Women Democrats (OWD), the women also launched voter registration and a civic education drive ahead of the referendum.

During the launch in Nairobi on Tuesday, Ms Elizabeth Ongoro, ODM deputy national chair – external affairs, said the team would start regional rallies beginning with Nairobi on April 26.

The rallies will also be held in Coast, Central, North Rift, South and Central Rift, Western, Nyanza, Eastern and North Eastern. "The OWD ‘Yes’ campaign targets grassroots women and we shall be holding regional rallies and civic education starting with Nairobi," Ongoro said.

Key issues

She asked women to turnout in large numbers and register as voters. Ongoro said time for reforms was now, adding the Proposed Constitution would ensure gains not only for women’s emancipation but also on other key issues.

Ongoro said those opposed to the document should know there is nowhere where there is a perfect law.

"We cannot reject the Proposed Constitution that gives Kenyans 95 per cent gains," Ongoro said.

Nominated MP Rachel Shebesh cautioned those opposed to the document against confusing Kenyans.

"We will go all over the country to tell the public the truth about the document," said Shebesh.

Earlier, the Executive Director of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy Njeri Kabeberi said, so far, there has been no political party, which has come out to oppose the document.

She said CMD would launch a ‘Yes’ campaign through the 33 political parties and other organisations, which are members of the centre.

Meanwhile, the Nambale Movement for Change has said Kenyans can no longer afford to frustrate the quest for a new constitution.

The movement’s boss, Peter Odima said the price of injustices the Kenyans have had to pay being governed by a flawed constitution since independence is too dear to calculate and a debt too huge for any Government now or in future to repay.

"Worse still the extreme negative consequences of this state of affairs to the national fabric economically, politically, socially, morally, environmentally among other critical aspects will take centuries to correct or never," said Mr Odima.
