The National Churches Council of Kenya (NCCK) hopes talks with the Government on the proposed law will bear fruits.

Next week’s talks aims at unlocking the deadlock on contentious issues the Church want resolved before the draft is put to a referendum.

NCCK Secretary-General Cannon Peter Karanja said they have confidence in the negotiations and that a compromise would be reached soon.

Karanja said Christians should wait for the official position of the Church from their leaders.

Karanja was speaking when he met the clergy from nine districts in the South Rift in Nakuru, Thursday.

The leaders reiterated they would mobilise their followers to vote ‘No’ if the issues they have raised over the Kadhis’ courts and abortion are not addressed.

They called for the consensus talks to be speeded up to ensure a common stand ahead of the referendum.

"As Christians we have keenly participated in the constitution review process and have raised cardinal issues, which were regrettably ignored by various organs of review," they said in a statement read by Reverend Sammy Tonui.
