WANJIRU'S LAST DAYS AS AN MP

Former Starehe MP Maina Kamanda continued to lead in the vote recount for the constituency ordered by the court.

So far Kamanda has 28,020 votes to Housing Assistant Minister Margaret Wanjiru's 16,559.

Already 105 ballot boxes out 204 ballot boxes have been scrutinized in the exercise which is in its sixth week with 96 ballot boxes remaining.

The recount started on February 25 after Kamanda won an appeal at the court asking for a recount of votes cast in the constituency in the 2007 parliamentary election.

According to results released then, Bishop Wanjiru who vied for the seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket beat Kamanda of Party of National Unity (PNU) by 895 votes.

Kamanda successfully filed for an election petition in early 2008 seeking the annulment of the election outcome as announced by the defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK)'s returning officer alleging various voting anomalies.

Last month, the Appellate Court dismissed an application filed Bishop Wanjiru against the recount saying it was filed out of time.

The MP had moved to the highest court in the land in an attempt to stop the scrutiny of the ballot boxes and a recount of the votes cast in December 2007.
