Two Kenyan Makerere University students were shot dead by a security guard Monday night in a bizarre incident that resulted in wild demonstrations at Uganda's leading Institution of Higher Learning.
Brian Amuoga, a first year Bachelor of Law student and Ignatius Nyongesa, a third year BCOM student died as they were undergoing treatment at Mulago hospital while a Ugandan student is fighting for his life at the same hospital.
A Kenyan student at the Institution, Erastus Muhia who witnessed the incident said the two Kenyans died from the same bullet while the Ugandan student who was also hit by the same bullet is in critical condition.
Narrating the midnight tragic incident, Muhia said it all began when a commotion broke out between the Kenyan camp that was backing their compatriot Kamau Gikuru for the Students leader position, the Guild, and the Ugandan camp that was rooting for their own.
Muhia said the two groups had reached an amicable solution of maintaining peaceful campaigns when suddenly a security guard emerged and aimed his G3 rifle and aimed it at Amuoga who died instantly. Nyongesa was rushed to Mulago hospital where he died as doctors were battling to save his life.
Sources in Kampala said the guard surrendered himself to the police and was detained to help with the investigations.
Learning at the campus was paralyzed for most part of today as the students engaged the police in running battles and threatening to storm the Mulago Mortuary to collect the two bodies of their colleagues and demonstrate with them in the Kampala streets.
Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Baria Mureva addressed the irate students in a bid to reach an amicable solution to the standoff but they walked out on him.
The campaigns for the MUK guild presidency has attracted candidates from all leading parties in Uganda with two Kenyans also battling it out for supremacy on Independent tickets.
Kenya's Grace Ruto is the only lady candidate who is challenging the male candidates
