KAMORE MAINA
Nakumatt senior auditor James Karanja was assassinated by a police officer hired by a cartel stealing money from the supermarket, investigations indicate.
Karanja was shot twice by a lone gunman on a motorcycle as he left his office on Mombasa Road on May 7.
The criminals did not steal anything from the auditor.
He was killed because he sealed loopholes in the supermarket's distribution network where staff pocketed millions of shillings in fraudulent deals, police said yesterday.
Police suspect that Karanja was silenced because he unearthed a major financial scandal involving some senior managers at Nakumatt.
Investigators from the Flying Squad unit and Makadara CID have been probing the suspicious murder.
On Monday, they arrested boda boda operator Dennis Maroko who is based at Kangemi, who led them to police officer Ezekiel Onsongo based in Runda police station, suspected to be the hitman.
Also arrested is the supermaket's accounts manager Philip Manyura who is said to have taken part in planning the murder.
Maroko told investigators that he was hired by Onsongo to take him to Mombasa Road, where the officer shot and killed the auditor.
He said he was not involved in planning the murder and did not know why Onsongo shot the suspect.
He was shot twice in the head and once in the chest shortly after leaving the company’s offices.
Last evening, investigators were contemplating whether to charge Maroko or make him a prosecution witness.
Onsongo, Maroko and Manyura will be taken to court today.
