- Nobody has had his land taken away and it won’t happen, says PM
Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Saturday returned to Narok County for the second day of campaigning and fired a salvo at URP leader William Ruto and his team for opposing the new Constitution.
In a thinly veiled attack, Mr Odinga said the team that opposed the new Constitution was misinterpreting it for their selfish gains and added that all unused land would be taxed in accordance to the law.
“The red card team is cheating Kenyans that I have said my government will take away agricultural land from people; that is not true. The Constitution says that all land that is given to individuals for building should be used as designated, but some selfish people just wait for prices to go higher so that they can sell the plots in towns; I did not say agricultural land,” Mr Odinga said.
The Prime Minister said the leaders in the No team told Kenyans during the referendum vote that they would lose their land if the new Constitution was enacted.
“They said that men would marry each other; that all hospitals would have special wards for abortion and those with small pieces of land would have them taken away from them. They invented these misrepresentations to frustrate the dreams of Kenyans. It is time that they are held to account,” the Prime Minister said.
“Two years into the new Constitution, nobody has had his land taken away and it will not happen. The new Constitution has secured communal land, private land and public land from grabbers,” the PM added.
He said those who spread the allegations about the new Constitution’s provisions on land wanted to secure what they had illegally acquired. The PM said a Cord government would create jobs, enhance access to quality and affordable healthcare, expand roads and invest in quality education at all levels.
On Friday night, his Cord Alliance co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka assured supporters in the Wiper Democratic Movement that their interests would be catered for under a fair, transparent and democratic system.
Mr Musyoka said Cord is meant to unite the country and forge ahead, assuring the people of a peaceful political transition after winning the next poll.
“I assure you that there will be real power sharing under tough negotiations between all coalition partners under Cord,” he added.
In Narok, the PM said the Cord government would create jobs, enhance access to quality and affordable healthcare, expand roads and invest in quality education at all levels. “Every Kenyan should be able to access quality healthcare within a 10 kilometre radius. This is something I will ensure as president,” Mr Odinga said. He promised to ensure the road from Narok through Loita to the border with Tanzania is tarmacked.
The Cord team is expected to unveil its presidential candidate and running mate on December 22 at Uhuru Park, two days before Christmas.
Mr Odinga who made several stopovers in Narok, said that the provincial administration would be restructured according to the Constitution in line with the devolved government and that the office of chiefs would not be scrapped.
Raila received a memorandum from leader of Trans-Mara that envisages their aspirations of development.
The first and only elected woman councillor for Shartuka ward, Lucy Tasur lauded the prime minister for his reform credentials. “It is only through ODM party that a woman in the Maasai community was elected as a leader despite the strong cultural ties,” she said.
Accompanied by roads minister Franklin Bett, Heritage Minister William Ole Ntimama, Nkoidilla Ole Lankas of Narok South and an aspirant for the newly created Emurua Dikirr constituency Joanah Ng’eno.
The premier held rallies in Shartuka Secondary school, Enoosaen town and Ang’ata Barkoi trading centre where he told the residents of Trans-Mara that agricultural production is top most in his Manifesto.
He added that the coalition government hindered him from achieving his plan, but all will be fully implemented once Cord forms the next government.
“The Cord alliance is set to win the election and it will be a first round victory, we will only play 90 minutes and no extra time. Last election ODM won but the referee ‘Samuel Kivuitu’ said we were offside, now the referee is new with qualified lines men who are ready to ensure a fair and free election,” Mr Odinga said.
We cannot walk the talk of a new Kenya together if you don’t register as voters and make the real change it means that we will be reading from two different scripts.”
On roads , the premier said that Ngorengore road headed to Lolgorian-Migori road up to Mihuru bay will be tarmac ked once he is President, “The time remaining is short , only 79 days to election , 4 days to register as a voter and bring in the government that will build the roads.”
Nevertheless, the PM said, the new Constitution has brought forward the equalization fund to cater for all marginalized areas in the country and give equitable development to all Kenyans.
“If it is not for the tribal prism with which voters look at leaders, then US President Barack Obama would not have been even Kenyan President, they see him as Luo, but for America, he won the election against Mitt Romney a white,” Mr Odinga said cautioning Kenyans against tribalism.
