A Cabinet Minister has dismissed attempts by four leaders from Western Province to back a single presidential flag bearer ahead of the coming elections.
Planning Minister Wycliffe Oparanya said efforts the efforts were bound to fail since the region “has never known a solid political union like the one being fronted”.
New Ford Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya boss Moses Wetang’ula and Mr Cyrus Jirongo of Federal Party of Kenya have said they were working on a Western Alliance before Tuesday.
“Since time immemorial out leaders have never worked together to achieve a common political goal and I doubt whether the likes of Wamalwa who appear undecided and Jirongo can midwife such a delicate thing,” said Mr Oparanya while addressing ODM supporters at Mabole Primary School in his Butere constituency at the weekend.
Mr Wamalwa had earlier claimed that an agreement to form the alliance was as good as done and would be unveiled latest Tuesday.
“The four of us have been consulting one another over this and plans are at an advanced stage to seal the deal once and for all,” said the Justice Minister at a funeral in Malava constituency at the weekend.
Mr Oparanya claimed the communities in Western Province lacked the numbers to form a strong political force and had reservations over the possibility of the region voting as a bloc in the next elections.
Instead, the minister advised residents to support Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s presidential bid, arguing that he was the only leader who had demonstrated leadership qualities.
“You want a person who is committed towards implementing the new Constitution to the letter and moving the country forward for the good of all Kenyans,” he said.
Hit a wall
He said ODM stood a better chance of forming the next government.
Mr Oparanya claimed that a recent meeting with Mr Wamalwa, Mr Jirongo and Mr Wetang’ula at his home in Nairobi ended in disagreement after his attempts to win them over hit a brick wall.
“They had no idea how to translate divided voices in the region to a force but refused to cross over to ODM,” he said.
He said the region’s future depended on how Mr Odinga would perform during the polls.

Mr Mudavadi is said to be keen on establishing alliances that would portray a national outlook as opposed to regional groupings.
