It is Christmas time. Jingle bells are ringing and for supermarket merchandisers, what would be better than a loaded shopper piling up goodies?
This is that time businesspeople hope to smile all the way to the bank. But at times, this is not always the case as was witnessed at a city centre supermarket recently.
A shopper who was dressed to kill pulled a stunt that left the managers and attendants open-mouthed and other shoppers chuckling behind the shelves.
The unidentified man walked to the supermarket at midday, grabbed a trolley and loaded it with shopping. But he left as majestically and empty handed as he’d walked in.
According to a member of staff who declined to give his name, the man seemed confident and loaded.
Bill
He stacked almost everything, from foodstuffs, lotions, clothes, women stuff and many others. In fact, he sampled every section of the supermarket, only giving a wide berth to the sections stocking bulky and heavy stuff.
“We dutifully assisted him to pack the trolley. Personally, I thought he was just a love-strung man preparing to move in with his other half,” explained the employee.
After the trolley was filled to capacity, the customer pushed it to the counter and the cashier rung up the cost.
But he requested to set the trolley aside because he needed more stuff and he wanted to settle the bill at once.
Once more, he wheeled another trolley to different sections where he loaded up plastic containers, electronics and even basic farm equipment and then smugly jumped the queue towards the cashier. Other “small” shoppers waited patiently as the cashier painstakingly served this esteemed client.
Dumbfounded
“He was composed throughout, but kept eye on the computer as the cost was being computed,” revealed an attendant.
But when the total cost of the items had been computed and supermarket attendants were packaging his shopping, the man walked past without a word and without making payment.
Dumbfounded workers stood mouths agape as other customers wondered what was going on.
After leaving the premises, some security guys and managers followed him to a nearby bus station and confronted him.
But he remained mum, only scrutinising them from head to toe with a vague smile.
They, however, let him go despite the pain he took them through.
It was not clear whether he was nuts or just playing a weird hoax, but the chain’s management is still trying to figure out the meaning behind the startling episode.
