Monday, the 17th of December 2012 -President Mwai Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka today used their speaking times at the Speaker’s Roundtable in Mombasa to talk of the importance of free and fair elections in March next year. The three also urged Kenyans to register to vote before tomorrow’s deadline.
President Kibaki assured Kenyans that his government was doing everything possible to put in place measures to ensure that Kenya has peaceful elections in 2013;
President Kibaki also urged Kenyans to register as voters ahead of the deadline on Tuesday.
"Elections should not be about stopping one community from ascending to power, it should be about ideals," he said.
The PM also urged his fellow aspirants to avoid declaring victory prematurely.
VP Kalonzo Musyoka meanwhile used most of his speaking time to pour praise on the 10th parliament saying its achievements had been overlooked;
"The 10th parliament has done well. It has given Kenya one of the world's progressive Constitution," he said.
The VP also warned on the danger of ethnicity on the country’s economic agenda;
"We cannot gain Vision 2030 if we entertain strife between neighbouring communities," he said.
"Kenya wants to prove to the world that this elections will be peaceful regardless of whether it shall be free of fair," he added.
The Forum is still underway. Others that have spoken are Speaker Kenneth Marende, Justice Minister Eugene Wamalwa, Police Commissioner Matthew Iteere among other prominent players in the private sector.
