WILLY Mutunga replies to UHURU and RUTO on CLINTON meeting

Tuesday August 14, 2012 - Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has cleared the air on the ongoing controversy of a meeting between him and the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In a statement to the press on Monday evening, Mutunga denied discussing the fate of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto at the International Criminal Court (ICC) saying he only discussed the ongoing judiciary reforms.

“We only informed the US Secretary of State that as a the Judiciary, we would be contacting several development partners to seek their support in delivering on the judiciary transformation framework, and that we would be happy if the US would be part of the conversation,” Dr Mutunga said

The CJ said they discussed the preparations on the judiciary to ensure a credible, free and fair poll scheduled on March 4, 2013.

Mutunga also denied claims that Foreign Affairs Minister Prof Sam Ongeri was locked out of his meeting with Mrs Clinton, saying that it was the Minister who excused himself.

On the fate of Uhuru and Ruto vying for presidency, Dr Mutunga said the two are Kenyans citizens who have the right to vie for any seat, saying their eligibility is only at the hands of the Kenyans and not outside forces as earlier expressed by the media.
