If you lose your JOB, leave the country or die, NSSF will be there for YOU

If you lose your JOB, leave the country or die, NSSF will be there for YOU

Wednesday 22nd AUGUST 2012 - In a bid to make National Social Security Fund (NSSF) more beneficial to its members, the body has resolved to get for its members immigration and funeral grants with six-month financial support in case of job loss if a proposed law is enacted. The NSSF has put the interest of its members at heart in the NSSF Bill 2012 which seeks to transform it from its current provident status to a pension fund.

NSSF trustees board chairman Adan Mohamed said that members who move to other countries will have their benefits secured and exported to them, the first time this will be made into law. The draft Bill is under deliberation by stakeholders and they are proposing a maternity grant be included in future.

Contributors will have to increase monthly remittances to the fund under a tier programme provided for in the Bill if passed into law. The Bill proposes that value of monthly payments be divided into two tiers one for low earners and the second for upper and middle class earners.

Francis Atwoli, Central Organisation of Trade Unions secretary general who was represented at the meeting seemed in agreement with most sections of the draft law. However he stated that 50,000 penalty for employers who fail to register their employees under the scheme as provided in the draft Bill is too low and will do little to deter the problem.

Lawyer Arthur Eshiwani, a consultant for the NSSF on the Bill said the proposed law has provision to support a member who loses his job for a maximum period of six months during which the member will be given Sh10,000 monthly.
