Former President Moi in TROUBLE for remarks

Tuesday August 14, 2012 - Former President Moi is currently swimming on murky waters, after he was accused of hate speech by the Kenya National Association of Deaf (KNAD) over his comments on a blind nominee to the Land Commission.

Moi on Sunday questioned the wisdom of appointing Dr Samuel Tororei, who is blind to the land commission, saying the move could endanger interests of the Kalenjin community due to the fact that he cannot see the land problem in Rift Valley.

KNAD National Chairman Nickson Kakiri reacted angrily to the comments and demanded he publicly apologises to Tororei.

“The utterances by Moi have set a dangerous precedent towards achieving equality, Kakiri said

“Article 27 of the Constitution outlaws discrimination on grounds of disability and accords equal protection of the law. Persons with disabilities should be accorded equal opportunity for appointment in all State organs,’ Kakiri added.

Kakiri said people are appointed to National Commissions to serve the people of Kenya generally and protect their sovereignty and not communities of origin.

He asked the former president to apologise for the unfortunate remarks and shows that he respects disabled people.
