Regional development minister, Fred Gumo was urging nominated councillor Simba Arati to step down in favour of the acting mayor George Aladwa.
Mr Arati could hear none of it and accused the Westlands MP of interfering in the polls instead of leaving the councillors decide.
He stated that the mayors of Mombasa and Kisumu are ODM nominated.
Mr Arati, a newcomer, has recently become a force to reckon with since he has the support of minority communities and deep pockets now seen as a threat.
He would be gunning for the seats’ ticket against Mr Aladwa and Mr William Kinyanyi of Kariobangi south ward.
Efforts to reach Mr Gumo were futile as his mobile phone went unanswered and he did not respond to text messages of inquiry.
Mr Kinyanyi is also popular due to his soft approach to issues and firm stand.
In the PNU camp, things are not rosy after a loser in the nominations, councillor Bernard Mutura is expected to have his named proposed on the floor during the elections on August 11.
His chief strategist, councillor George Wanjohi confirmed this yesterday saying: “We are in the race as the nominations were not free and fair and our team was intimidated by area MPs.”
