Teacher forces Standard Four girl to abort

By Linah Benyawa

A girl, 14, is living in agony after she was involved in a love affair with a teacher who impregnated her.
The Standard Four pupil at Silaloni Primary School, Kwale, is traumatised after the teacher forced her to abort.
The girl said she met with the teacher thrice at their shamba when she had gone to graze cattle.
"I was in the grazing field one morning when the teacher came and forced me to sleep with him. This did not happen once but thrice," said the girl.
But she found out she was pregnant when her mother took her to hospital for some tests.
"When he got wind of my pregnancy, he asked me to meet with him at a posho mill and gave me a pill, which I took. After a few hours, I started bleeding," she said.
And following the abortion two weeks ago, the bleeding has not stopped despite having been taken to hospital by her mother.
The District Education Officer Kiberu Kimani confirmed he was aware of the issue and had sent an officer to investigate.
"Somebody called me about the case and I decided to dispatch an officer to investigate the case and find out if there is validity or they are just mere allegations," said Mr Kimani.
A teacher at the school who spoke to The Standard said the matter has been kept secret and claimed that the girl’s parents had been compromised by the teacher.
Compromised
"When I talked to the girl, she admitted to have been involved in an explicit affair with the teacher, but as we tried to follow up the matter, the family declined to give more information," said the teacher who sought anonymity.
He claimed the school administration and the parents were keeping the case a secret to protect the teacher from being punished.
"The girl and the family have been giving conflicting information to the school committee and education officers because they have been compromised. But this teacher has to be punished so that he can be taught a lesson," he added.
Recently a primary school teacher in Makueni County was arraigned in court for allegedly defiling a pupil.
Ismael Mutuku, appeared before the Tawa Law Courts Resident Magistrate and denied the charge.
The Ngai Primary School teacher in Mbooni West District was charged with defiling a Standard Eight pupil at the school.
