Residents of Mathare yesterday had surprise guests as Radio Jambo broadcast live on their door steps. The breakfast team which comprises Gidi Gidi, Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee and comedian Eric Omondi held their show in a mobile studio at the slum's Kambi Moto area. "This is part of an initiative by Amnesty International to introduce slum radio where slum dwellers can air their positive stories. For a very long time the media has been highlighting only the negative stories but today we discovered that despite all they go through they still have good stories to tell.
The residents were very excited that Radio Jambo came to them unlike most of the time where they go after the media," Gidi told Word Is. "We also had an opportunity to experience first hand the hardships the slum dwellers go through. For instance on Thursday there was a fire that killed three people and you could see the bitterness in their faces but all the same they have the will to push on." Special guests in the show included Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi and gospel artiste Juliani who also happens to be the Amnesty International ambassador.
